Market Share Continues to Drift to Chrome, Away from IE

Net Applications: Firefox lost a bit in January, too.

The slow-motion surrender of browser market share continued for Microsoft in January 2010, according to Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based Net Applications.

Internet Explorer saw its market share drop half a percentage point to 62.12 percent at the end of January. The browser has lost about 10 percent of market share in a year.

Firefox also dropped share -- two-tenths of a percentage point to end up at 24.43 percent. The drop was the first for Firefox in six months.

Steadily gaining is the Google Chrome browser, now at 5.22 percent. By comparison, the browser was at 1.62 percent in March 2009. Google Inc. launched Chrome in September 2008, and the browser passed the Apple Safari in market share a few months ago.
