The Windows Dilemma

It's the IT question of the decade: Should businesses migrate to Microsoft's much-maligned Windows Vista operating system?

Or should they hold out for Windows 7, due out in two or three years? General Motors is leaning toward the latter approach:

"We're considering bypassing Vista and going straight to Windows 7," CTO Fred Killeen told BusinessWeek in May.

But Forrester Research Inc. advises against that route: "Although we applaud companies for thinking ahead, there are some harsh realities for those considering skipping Windows Vista," analyst Benjamin Gray wrote in an April report. "We're recommending that most clients start the migration to Windows Vista sooner rather than later to avoid potential pitfalls."
